The Performance Garage, 1515 Brandywine Street, Philadelphia
FLATLAND… and other worlds features two works by Jumatatu Poe: Flatland (presented in 2-D) – a Philadelphia premiere, and The Flight Attendant – the first preview installment of a longer piece to be created under the same title. Flatland, the October program’s highly physical title work, satirically addresses the flatness of human communication in contemporary America, where the soundbyte supersedes substance, the instant message overpowers the intellectual one. Visual/physical inspiration for this piece is taken from Poe’s nightmares of being trapped in an infinite, two-dimensional plane. How does a three-dimensional person exist in such an alien geometrical reality? How can meaningful conversation and intimate encounters exist in a land of soundbytes? Poe’s performers venture into every part of Jeanne Ruddy’s Performance Garage (with movement and video) searching to solve these riddles. The show also features works by Flatland cast members Willie Brown, Lindsay Browning, Justin Bryant, Karama Butler, and Maya Johnson.
